| THE CONSTANT GARDENER |
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN |
GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. |
A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE |
MATCH POINT |
2/5 [40%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE missed MATCH POINT, VIOLENCE and GARDENER / picked CINDERELLA MAN, MUNICH and GEISHA instead
who should win:
Brokeback Mountain is the best American film of 2005 and wholeheartedly deserves this award, although for the first time in a long while, all five nominees are worthy of their nominations.
who will win:
This is Brokeback Mountain's award to win and should be the final hurdle before its groundbreaking Oscar victory.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Brokeback Mountain is - of course - not much of a surprise, and it is a great thing to see this film win here. Although it's won precurser after precurser after precurser and I have heralded it all along, there was always something deep inside of me that said when it all came down to it, there would be some sort of right-wing backlash against the film - especially considering how far backwards (social issues wise) we've gone post 9/11 - but now it looks firmly in the grasp of all of us Progressives (Gay, Straight, Bi, Metrosexual, Liberal, Left-wing lunatics). Hail hail Freedonia - the Left is coming back!!!!!

| THE SQUID & THE WHALE |
MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS |
THE PRODUCERS |
PRIDE & PREJUDICE |
WALK THE LINE |
3/5 [60%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE missed MRS. HENDERSON and SQUID & WHALE / picked FAMILY STONE and RENT instead
who should win:
Pride & Prejudice within a hair over The Squid & the Whale. Both films being great ensemble pieces on love and family, and both repleat with grandiose writing and acting.
who will win:
Conventional wisdom says Walk the Line, but I don't think that is as sure a thing as Ray was last year, although in the end I will go with that conventional wisdom and pick Walk the Line - but Pride & Prejudice, The Squid & the Whale or even The Producers would not totally surprise - afterall, this is the "secondary" Best Picture award of the night.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Walk the Line walks off with the award as expected.
| BEST DIRECTOR |
| ANG LEE, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN |
STEVEN SPIELBERG, MUNICH |
WOODY ALLEN, MATCH POINT |
GEORGE CLOONEY, GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. |
PETER JACKSON, KING KONG |
FERNANDO MEIRELLES, THE CONSTANT GARDENER |
| 4/5 [80%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
| I
who should win:
Ang Lee directed a beautiful movie and deserves this award, with Fernando Meirelles coming in second.
who will win:
Out of the past five years of Globe Awards, only once (2003 w/ LOTR & Jackson) have the Director and BP matched up. Combine that with George Clooney being someone that people want desperately to award for something...anything, he will be victorious. But as long as it is not Spielberg, I'll be happy.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Ang Lee becomes only the second Director this decade to walk off with Director AND Picture + this is his second Golden Globe, winning for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000.
| BEST ACTRESS - DRAMA |
| MARIA BELLO, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE |
GWYNETH PALTROW, PROOF |
FELICITY HUFFMAN, TRANSAMERICA |
CHARLIZE THERON, NORTH COUNTRY |
ZIYI ZHANG, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA |
| 3/5 [60%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
who should win:
Although she should be cast in Best supporting Actress, Maria Bello deserves this. Although Zhang does deserve a win...but for 2046 instead.
who will win:
Everybody's saying Huffman, but I'm going to go out on a limb and call this one for Maria Bello (category confusion or not).
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Felicity Huffman takes the award home and dammit, I should have gotten this one right, but silly me, i had to be different and pick Bello...ah well.
| BEST ACTRESS - COMEDY/MUSICAL |
| REESE WITHERSPOON, WALK THE LINE |
DAME JUDI DENCH, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS |
KEIRA KNIGHTLY, PRIDE & PREJUDICE |
SARAH JESSICA PARKER, THE FAMILY STONE |
LAURA LINNEY, THE SQUID & THE WHALE |
| 4/5 [80%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
who should win:
Although I did love The Squid & the Whale and Pride & Prejudice more, I am going with Reese Witherspoon in the (other-than-acting-and-music) rather mediocre Walk the Line.
who will win:
This is Reese Witherspoon's year. She will be crowned Queen of Hollywood and even her slaughtering a bus full of school children will not change that (okay, that might change it, but not much else).
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Reese Witherspoon, the undisputed new Queen of Hollywood. Long live the Queen.
| BEST ACTOR - DRAMA |
| PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN, CAPOTE |
HEATH LEDGER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN |
DAVID STRATHAIRN, GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. |
RUSSELL CROWE, CINDERELLA MAN |
TERRENCE HOWARD, HUSTLE & FLOW |
| 4/5 [80%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
who should win:
Heath Ledger gives the most breathtaking performance of the year - male or female - possibly of the last several years. No matter how good anyone else, it would be a shame to see him lose here.
who will win:
Everyone's saying Philip Seymour Hoffman this and Philip Seymour Hoffman that, and yes he is the front runner for the Oscar and has won the most precurser awards, but I am saying the man who deserves this - Heath Ledger - will win this. Perhapds this is wishful thinking, I don't know, but there it is anyway.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Philip Seymour Hoffman wins another award, and it should have been an easy call, but something inside me said go with Heath - and we all see how that worked out for me.

| BEST ACTOR - COMEDY/MUSICAL |

| JOAQUIN PHOENIX, WALK THE LINE |
NATHAN LANE, THE PRODUCERS |
CILLIAN MURPHY, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO |
JEFF DANIELS, THE SQUID & THE WHALE |
PIERCE BROSNAN, MATADOR |
JOHNNY DEPP, CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY |
| 5/5 [100%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE - Who knew it would be six nominees?
who should win:
Jeff Daniels hands down. He showed that he is much more than Dumb & Dumber -- much much much more.
who will win:
Although Daniels (or Lane) could surprise, this is most likely Joaquin Phoenix's award.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Hello my name is Joaquin Phoenix.
| BEST SCREENPLAY |
| MATCH POINT |
MUNICH |
CRASH |
GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. |
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN |
| 5/5 [100%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
who should win:
Since I have yet to see Woody's Match Point (going to a screening on Thursday though), I will say Brokeback Mountain deserves this, but Good Night, and Good Luck. is a great screenplay too.
who will win:
Since I have already two Globes to Brokeback, and the Globes sometimes like to spread the wealth around, and it hits close to many of the Hollywood-based press close to home, and it's on a winning streak, let's say Crash. Of course, if they don't give Clooney the Director award, they are going to want to award him somewhere so it could be here instead.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Although I never saw it coming, I am glad to see Brokeback Mountain take home this award (one of four).
| BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS |
| SHIRLEY MACLAINE, IN HER SHOES |
RACHEL WEISZ, THE CONSTANT GARDENER |
FRANCES MCDORMAND, NORTH COUNTRY |
SCARLETT JOHANSSON, MATCH POINT |
MICHELLE WILLIAMS, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN |
| 1/5 [20%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
who should win:
This is a tough call between Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams - both are incredible - but for pure emotional bravura, I would have to go with Michelle Williams
who will win:
Michelle Williams is the girl to beat here - plus a his & hers Globes would be a sight to see. Their could be a spoiler though, and this is the category most likely to have that happen in.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Rachel Weisz, and although I did not pick her, it was nearly a tie in my own mind.
| BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR |
| PAUL GIAMATTI, CINDERELLA MAN |
GEORGE CLOONEY, SYRIANA |
MATT DILLON, CRASH |
WILL FERRELL, THE PRODUCERS |
BOB HOSKINS, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS |
| 2/5 [40%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
who should win:
I've only seen two of these performances and am going to have to go with Matt Dillon over Clooney.
who will win:
As for the win, that damned conventional wisdom says Giamatti, and if Director doesn't go his way, possibly Clooney, but I am going with Matt Dillon as a surprise victor.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
George Clooney. They had to give him something, and since he didn't win Director or Screenplay.
| BEST ORIGINAL SCORE |
| MEMOIRS OF GEISHA |
SYRIANA |
KING KONG |
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN |
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA |
| 3/5 [60%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
who should win:
The methodical tragic simple score from Brokeback Mountain is the best of the bunch (although nothing beats the music from the non-nominated 2046 for pure and haunting beauty).
who will win:
This one is anyone's guess, so I'll just pick a name from my hat - Memoirs of A Geisha it is.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Memoirs of A Geisha. And John Williams wins another award, probably the only chance this film has at an Oscar 9other than possibly Costume Design).
| BEST ORIGINAL SONG |
| TRANSAMERICA |
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN |
CHRISTMAS IN LOVE |
THE PRODUCERS |
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA |
| 2/5 [40%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
who should win:
None of these song really hit with me (even the one from my beloved Brokeback), so I suppose I don't have a pick here.
who will win:
The Globes looove to award Best Song to music icons (Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Bob Dylan), so I am going with Dolly Parton for Transamerica, although Mel Brooks could win as well.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Brokeback Mountain wins another one.
| BEST FOREIGN FILM |
| PARADISE NOW, PALESTINE |
KUNG FU HUSTLE, CHINA |
THE PROMISE, CHINA |
TSOTSI, SOUTH AFRICA |
JOYEUX NOEL, FRANCE |
| 3/5 [60%] NOMINATION PREDICTION RATE
who should win:
I have only seen two and the best one is Paradise Now, well over the ultimately disappointing Kung Fu Hustle.
who will win:
I believe Paradise Now has the political fortitude to win, although Tsotsi does too, doesn't it.
and the Golden Globe goes to...
Paradise Now becomes the frontrunner for the Oscar - not that I haven't already been saying that all along.
