BEST PICTURE - DRAMA
CINDERELLA MAN BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA MUNICH
If there are six nominees: SYRIANA or THE CONSTANT GARDENER
(unfortunately, I think MATCH POINT will be snubbed in this category, not sure why)
post nomination comments:
Went 2 for 5 here (as opposed to 4 for 5 last year), but overall I am pleasantly surprised at my misses. It's great to see A History of Violence make the grade. Although it probably won't make the big show come Oscar Nomination Morning, its nod here keeps it alive - for now. Brokeback - the best American film in nearly three years (Van Sant's Elephant if you want to know) - is of course a sure thing come Oscar time, and this just pounds it in a little more. Good Night, and Good Luck keeps marching on and both Match Point and The Constant Gardener can sigh a collective pfffeww of relief, for they are still in the Oscar race. The big news here though is the omission of Spielberg's Munich (although he did grab a director nod). Does this mean the beginning of the end for that film's chance at gold?? You have to go back to 1999 to find the last time all five Oscar nominees were NOT accounted for in the Globe noms.

BEST PICTURE - COMEDY/MUSICAL
THE FAMILY STONE RENT THE PRODUCERS PRIDE & PREJUDICE WALK THE LINE
If there are six (and there probably will be) nominees: MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS
Although I would love to see THE SQUID & THE WHALE get nominated
but we can't leave out WALLACE & GROMIT, can we?
post nomination comments:
Went 3 for 5 (a little better than Drama), but I had a perfect 100% last year. I had Mrs. Henderson, but pulled it at the last minute to place Rent in. I figured the HFPA had bad taste. I am glad to see Squid & The Whale get in though - I loved this film. Walk the Line though is the only probable Oscar nominee listed here - the rest will come from Best Drama (as per usual).

BEST DIRECTOR
ANG LEE, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN STEVEN SPIELBERG, MUNICH WOODY ALLEN, MATCH POINT GEORGE CLOONEY, GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. ROB MARSHALL, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA
If there are six nominees:
RON HOWARD, CINDERELLA MAN or JAMES MANGOLD, WALK THE LINE
It would be great to see DAVID CRONENBERG in here
post nomination comments:
I went 4 for 5 (same as last year). Six total nominees chosen here and no real surprises (not even Fernando really). This does really help Peter Jackson though, but may end up killing Cronenberg's chances. The Oscar race, I think, is going to be between these six men, with one left home come January 30th.

BEST ACTRESS - DRAMA
JOAN ALLEN, THE UPSIDE OF ANGER CAMERON DIAZ, IN HER SHOES FELICITY HUFFMAN, TRANSAMERICA CHARLIZE THERON, NORTH COUNTRY ZIYI ZHANG, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA
If there are six nominees: CLAIRE DANES, SHOPGIRL
but never count out showbiz baby, GWYNETH PALTROW in PROOF
especially if Ms. HUFFMAN goes to the comedy category

BEST ACTRESS - COMEDY/MUSICAL
REESE WITHERSPOON, WALK THE LINE DAME JUDI DENCH, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS KEIRA KNIGHTLY, PRIDE & PREJUDICE SARAH JESSICA PARKER, THE FAMILY STONE JENNIFER ANISTON, RUMOR HAS IT
If there are six nominees: RHADA MITCHELL, MELINDA AND MELINDA
but if FELICITY HUFFMAN comes to comedy, that may keep Jen Aniston out of it.
LAURA LINNEY could get a nod here also (IF THINGS ARE SHAKEN UP A BIT)
unless the HFPA considers ROSARIO DAWSON in RENT as lead instead of supporting, then she could very well be in the top 5 (or at least top 6)

BEST ACTOR - DRAMA
PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN, CAPOTE HEATH LEDGER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN DAVID STRATHAIRN, GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. RUSSELL CROWE, CINDERELLA MAN ERIC BANA, MUNICH
If there are six nominees: RALPH FIENNES, CONSTANT GARDENER
There has been a big push to get Hustle & Flow moved to the comedy/musical category, but since that is not going to happen, TERRENCE HOWARD will have to hope for the best here (and who knows, it could happen)

BEST ACTOR - COMEDY/MUSICAL
JOAQUIN PHOENIX, WALK THE LINE NATHAN LANE, THE PRODUCERS CILLIAN MURPHY, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO JEFF DANIELS, THE SQUID & THE WHALE PIERCE BROSNAN, MATADOR
If there are six nominees: BILL MURRAY, BROKEN FLOWERS
but don't count out JOHNNY DEPP in CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
and could HEATH LEDGER for CASANOVA, grab a double nod?

BEST SCREENPLAY
MATCH POINT MUNICH CRASH GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
If there are six nominees: MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA or CAPOTE or SYRIANA

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
DIANE KEATON, THE FAMILY STONE GONG LI, MEMOIRS OF GEISHA MARIA BELLO, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE SCARLETT JOHANSSON, MATCH POINT UMA THURMAN, THE PRODUCERS
If there are six nominees: MICHELLE WILLIAMS, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
but let's not count out FRANCES MCDORMAND in NORTH COUNTRY
and there is also the possibility of ROSARIO DAWSON in RENT

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
JAKE GYLLENHAAL, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN GEORGE CLOONEY, SYRIANA MATT DILLON, CRASH MATTHEW BRODERICK, THE PRODUCERS CRAIG T. NELSON, THE FAMILY STONE
If there are six nominees: PAUL GIAMATTI, CINDERELLA MAN
but let's not forget about KEN WATANABE in MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA and/or BOB HOSKINS in MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
MEMOIRS OF GEISHA CINDERELLA MAN KING KONG BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN HARRY POTTER & THE GOBLET OF FIRE
If there are six nominees: CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
CRASH BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN THE CORPSE BRIDE THE PRODUCERS CHICKEN LITTLE
If there are six nominees: THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA

BEST FOREIGN FILM
PARADISE NOW, PALESTINE SOPHIE SCHOLL, GERMANY THE PROMISE, CHINA THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU, ROMANIA JOYEUX NOEL
If there are six nominees: TSOTSI or BLUEBIRD
but this category is always hard to predict, so who knows...I would looove to see 2046 here
