WINNERS HIGHLIGHTED IN GOLD

BEST POSTER DESIGN
2046 Junebug 3-Iron Melinda & Melinda The Squid & the Whale Walk the Line
Each and every poster from this film (and there were a lot of them) is breathtaking. I love the way it matches the artwork from inside the film. As silently romantic as the film itself. This French version of the split-personality film is the best. Very Woody. The half-drawn, fading-awayness fits the emotion of the film perfectly. Two big stars and they let the the poster art speak for itself.

BEST CREDITS SEQUENCE
Frank Miller's Sin City The New World King Kong 2046 Good Night, and Good Luck. Caché
The city becomes the title. Antique maps in the background and classical music in the fore. I'm sittin' on top, top of the world. As dreamy and exotic as the film itself Black & white with Jazz. Elegant and perfect for the period. Simple and genius.

BEST TRAILER
2046 Kung Fu Hustle King Kong A History of Violence Frank Miller's Sin City Saraband
Lush and creamy. More exhilerating than the movie itself. Anticipation is making me wait... Sharp and crisp. Full of the artistic boldness that made the movie look a lot better than it actually was. The Swedish (unsubtitled) trailer that I saw in NY was as breathtaking as Bergman himself.

King Kong (with the help of Peter Jackson) George Romero & his never-ending band of flesh eating zombies
Over twenty years since his last directorial outing. Who ever thought that the line "Mickey Rourke is the best thing about the movie!" would ever be uttered aloud. After a decade of sub par work, Woody comes back with a pair of films that are his best work since the mid nineties. A stroke, Zabriskie Point...nothing can stop this Auteur. Not near as "epic" as the original, but still a valiant effort. Last year, the Living Dead were nominated in this category (Dawn of the Dead remake and Shaun of the dead parody), but this year the King himself is back (even though I do find the film rather overrated).

BEST HOMAGE / TRIBUTE
King Fu Hustle King Kong Frank Miller's Sin City Pride & Prejudice Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith À Tout de Suite
An homage to the chop-sockey of old (including cameos from some of the original fighters). An homage to the original obviously. An homage to Film Noir (among other things). An homage to the days of the long gone smart and elegant period piece. An homage to... well, to itself I suppose. An homage (whether on purpose or not) to the days of the Nouvelle Vague
