WINNERS HIGHLIGHTED IN GOLD

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
2046
Christopher Doyle, Kwan Pun Leung & Yiu-Fai Lai
Brokeback Mountain
Rodrigo Prieto
The New World
Emmanuel Lubeski
Last Days
Harris Savides
The Constant Gardener
Cesar Charlone
Pride & Prejudice
Roman Osin
An obvious choice since the Cinema of Wong Kar-wai normally equates itself with a seductive visual beauty anyway - and his latest is no different. The mountains! The clouds! The dusty back roads! The empty horizons! The hot and heavy mountaintop pup tent sex scenes! The resplendent photography and never-stopping camera makes us feel as if we, the viewer, are part of the very nature of the film itself. Gus Van Sant & Harris Savides finale in their "death" trilogy may be the weakest entry, but the look is still a flawless and tender tempest. Fragmented and hallucinatory, the roving camera of this political thriller plays perfect partner to it's brilliant screenplay & acting. Full of breathtaking tracking shots and seemingly impossible weaving shots, Osin helps to make Austin seem fresh again.

Runners-up: Christian Berger's solid straight-forward work on Haneke's Caché makes us wonder the entire way through, is it live or is it Memorex? * Robert Elswit (who has worked most notably in the past with P.T. Anderson) gives us photography on Good Night, and Good Luck. that can be described, in two words, as elegant, and exquisite * The swirving yet simple photography of Peter Suschitzky on Cronenberg's A History of Violence (a director he has worked with on nearly every project) is the perfect visual companion piece to this tale of redemption gone awry * Weerasethakul's Tropical Malady (w/ cinematography by the trio of Pengpanitch, Tanapanitch & Vialard) looks just like the inconsolable breathtaking fantasy that it is.

Honourable Mentions: Adam Kimmel's combination of a desolate Kansas landscape and a smoky back-roomed Manhattan turn an otherwise blandish Capote into a much better film that it should have been * Laurent Brunet's as-close-as-close-can-get photography work on the unfairly under-valued Israeli drama Or (Mon Tresor), is nothing shy of a stark little supernova * Gyula Pados' work on Kontroll works well with the dark-edged strobe-lit undergrounds of the story * Ryszard Lenczewski gives a pollon-filled tragic look to My Summer of Love * Richard Deakins' electrified look for the otherwise mediocre Jarhead gives the film its few bright (yet eerily so) highlights.

Special Mention: The three-storied Eros, with the triumverate of Marco Pontecorvo on the Antonioni segment, Soderbergh acting as his own DP on his portion and Christopher Doyle (who you can see above as one of the actual nominees) doing his magic on the delicious Wong Kar-wai morsel.

***Christopher Doyle (Hero) and Harris Savides (Birth) were both nominated last year as well. Savides went one step further and won the award.

Lush and sexy, just like the film itself. Other-wordly in that ever so twisted Tim Burton manner. It's not just the photography and f/x elements..the set design too is fantastic. The beauty of the production make us all feel as if we are looking through a new world. An Art Deco masterpiece of design, from cragged Skull Island to thirties NYC. Pure elegance in every nuance of the design.
