2004 LAFCA PREDICTIONS

Okay, okay, a lot better than my 20% fiasco at guessing the NBR's Prediction success rate 7 for 14 (or: 50%) plus I got several of the runners-up correct These awards surely push Sideways (and it's Auteur) into real Oscar contention (if the NYFCC also picks it, it'll probably be coonsidered a lock then) - no real surprises though (Neeson was somewhat, but...) - this should help cement Thom Haden Church's Oscar chances as well as help a buzz-deteriorating Imelda Staunton AND possibly help Catalina Sandino Moreno (even if she didn't get Best Actress like I thought) due to her breakthrough mention - Other than that, here come the Globes and NYFCC on Monday, doo dah doo dah... Best Picture of 2004 Prediction: Sideways runner-up: Million Dollar Baby Actual Winner: Sideways runner-up: Million Dollar Baby WOW !! Perfecto baby ! Best Director Prediction: Alexander Payne for Sideways runner-up: Martin Scorsese for The Aviator Actual Winner:Alexander Payne for Sideways runner-up: Martin Scorsese for The Aviator 2 for 2 again !! Best Actor Prediction: Jeff Bridges in The Door in The Floor runner-up: Jamie Foxx in Ray Actual Winner: Liam Neeson in Kinsey runner-up: Paul Giamatti in Sideways I blew it on this one, but Neeson WAS a surprise here... Best Actress Prediction: Catalina Sandino Moreno in Maria Full of Grace runner-up: Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby Actual Winner: Imelda Staunton in Vera Drake runner-up: Julie Delpy in Before Sunset They actually gave it to my own personal choice (and what a great runner-up as well), but I really thought Catalina's Oscar chances would begin here... Best Supporting Actor Prediction: Thomas Haden Church in Sideways runner-up: David Carradine in Kill Bill, Volume 2 Actual Winner: Thomas Haden Church in Sideways runner-up: Morgan Freeman in Million Dollar Baby Another in the win column (and this also bodes well for Freeman to get an Oscar nod) Best Supporting Actress Prediction: Virginia Madsen in Sideways runner-up: Laura Linney in Kinsey Actual Winner: Virginia Madsen in Sideways runner-up: Cate Blanchett in The Aviator AND Coffee & Cigarettes Again, my predictions (unbelievably) ring true... Best Screenplay Prediction: Sideways runner-up: Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind Actual Winners: Sideways runner-up: Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind Perfection in my choices again (am I blushing?) Best Cinematography Prediction: Collateral runner-up: The House of Flying Daggers Actual Winner: Collateral runner-up: The House of Flying Daggers Now I know I'm blushing... Best Production Design Prediction: The Terminal runner-up: The Aviator Actual Winner: The Aviator runner-up: House of Flying Daggers almost got that one too... Best Score Prediction: Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban runner-up: The Aviator Actual Winner: The Incredibles runner-up: Birth Best Foreign Film Prediction: Maria Full of Grace runner-up: Bad Education Actual Winner: House of Flying Daggers runner-up: The Motorcycle Diaries Not too good on this one, but Foreign film has always been my weak point in predictions (but I love them so..) Best Animated Film Prediction: The Incredibles runner-up: Gost in the Shell 2: Innocence Actual Winner: The Incredibles Of course I got this one right - but I saw no listing for a runner-up... Best Documentary Prediction: Riding with Giants runner-up: Born into Brothels Actual Winner: Born into Brothels runner-up: Fahrenheit 9/11 almost... New Generation Award Prediction: Zach Braff (since I'm predicting Catalina for Best Actress...) runner-up: Catalina Sandino Moreno Actual Winner: Catalina Sandino Moreno and Joshua Marston Since my Best Actress pick didn't pan out, this only makes sense...
