BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
THE AVIATOR COLLATERAL FINDING NEVERLAND HOTEL RWANDA MILLION DOLLAR BABY
THE AVIATOR, NEVERLAND and MILLION DOLLAR BABY are locks I believe - Alternatives could very easily include CLOSER, KINSEY or VERA DRAKE (and possibly even THE NOTEBOOK, but doubtful) - and maybe I'm making a mistake including COLLATERAL, but I do love surprises !!

after the nominations were announced:
[4/5 prediction rate] I knew choosing COLLATERAL was a risky move (I took CLOSER out to make room, duh), but it looked like it was reserging in the Oscar Race - but I guess not so much anymore - but overall I got four right (missing CLOSER and KINSEY in what is a six-way race)
BEST MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY/MUSICAL
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND THE INCREDIBLES PHANTOM OF THE OPERA RAY SIDEWAYS
SPANGLISH or MEAN GIRLS could surprise - so could GARDEN STATE or BEYOND THE SEA

after the nominations were announced:
[5/5 perfect prediction rate] I'm glad I took SPANGLISH out at the last minute (after seeing it) - No surprises (obviously)
BEST ACTRESS - DRAMA
Laura Dern
in
WE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE
Catalina Sandino Moreno
in
MARIA FULL OF GRACE
Julia Roberts
in
CLOSER
Imelda Staunton
in
VERA DRAKE
Hilary Swank
in
MILLION DOLLAR BABY
I think this is where Catalina makes her Oscar move (a thing I would love to see) - alternatives could include Uma Thurman, Julie Delpy or Nicole Kidman (or maybe even Natalie Portman, who the HFPA could call lead for CLOSER - they did it with the CHICAGO girls a couple years back) - but then, the Globes sometimes pull a SIX-person race in one category...

after the nominations were announced:
[2/5 prediction rate] Not so good on this one - Mainly upset that Catalina wasn't nominated (I was hoping her Oscar chances would've been boosted here) - Otherwise, no surprises really - glad to see Nicole (who's BIRTH performance was highly underrated by critics) and Uma in there (even if it meant losing Laura Dern in one of my favourite roles of the year) - Kind of surprised by Scarlett Johansson, but she is liked by the HFPA...
BEST ACTOR - DRAMA
Don Cheadle
in
HOTEL RWANDA
Tom Cruise
in
COLLATERAL
Johnny Depp
in
FINDING NEVERLAND
Leonardo DiCaprio
in
THE AVIATOR
Liam Neeson
in
KINSEY
A lot of people are saying Eastwood will get a nomination (and I've said before this could be a six-way race), but I've left him off for Cruise (the HFPA loooves big Hollywood stars) - alternatives could include Jeff Bridges, Javier Bardem, Gael Garcia Bernal, Jude Law, Kevin Bacon or Jim Caviezel...

after the nominations were announced:
[4/5 prediction rate] I took Bardem out and replaced him with Cruise, which in hindsight was, of course, kind of stoopid, but at least Don Cheadle made it in (after many years of wonderfully toiling in small unseen roles)...
BEST ACTRESS - COMEDY/MUSICAL
Annette Bening
in
BEING JULIA
Lindsay Lohan
in
MEAN GIRLS
Natalie Portman
in
GARDEN STATE
Emmy Rossum
in
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
Kate Winslet
in
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
I can't see this line-up w/o Winslet, Bening, and Rossum, but I had to toss in Natalie (one of two double nominees I have predicted this year, along with Winslet) and Tea Leoni (who I last-minute cancelled) could still be a factor - alternative could include Renee Zellweger, Cate Blanchett, Paz Vega or Jennifer Garner...

after the nominations were announced:
[3/5 prediction rate] The HFPA loooooves ms. Zellweger (still can't fathom why!), so her nod wasn't much of a surprise, but Ashley Judd's was (although she was better in DE-LOVELY than ever before)...
BEST ACTOR - COMEDY/MUSICAL
Jim Carrey
in
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
Jamie Foxx
in
RAY
Paul Giamatti
in
SIDEWAYS
Adam Sandler
in
SPANGLISH
Kevin Spacey
in
BEYOND THE SEA
Bill Murray is the one I didn't like leaving out, so he could be there in place of Sandler - the other four should be pretty much mortal locks - other alternatives could be Gerald Butler (if PHANTOM hits big), Jude Law in Alfie, Tom Hanks or Kevin Kline...

after the nominations were announced:
[4/5 prediction rate] Kevin Kline instead of Adam Sandler was no surprise (should've known better I suppose)...
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Cloris Leachman
in
SPANGLISH
Laura Linney
in
KINSEY
Natalie Portman
in
CLOSER
Virginia Madsen
in
SIDEWAYS
Kate Winslet
in
FINDING NEVERLAND
I can't believe I left out Cate Blanchett (have I mentioned a six-way race yet?) - alternatives also could include Minnie Driver or Meryl Streep...

after the nominations were announced:
[3/5 prediction rate] I knew leaving Cate Blanchett out was a mistake, and even Meryl Streep wasn't a real surprise...
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
David Carradine
in
KILL BILL, VOLUME 2
Thomas Haden Church
in
SIDEWAYS
Morgan Freeman
in
MILLION DOLLAR BABY
Freddie Highmore
in
FINDING NEVERLAND
Clive Owen
in
CLOSER
Carradine is a personal favourite I just couldn't leave out, but Sarsgaard, De La Serna, Alda or Dustin Hoffman could sneak in somewhere...

after the nominations were announced:
[4/5 prediction rate] Really glad to see Carradine nominated (his performance in Kill Bill should be required watching for all acting students) and really glad to see Freddie Highmore left out (not a bad performance, but a little on the cutsey side for me - although I did predict him) - and for all my ranting about how COLLATERAL was going to make its Oscar move, I miss the one nomination it got, Jamie Foxx...
BEST DIRECTOR
Clint Eastwood
for
MILLION DOLLAR BABY
Michael Mann
for
COLLATERAL
Mike Nichols
for
CLOSER
Alexander Payne
for
SIDEWAYS
Martin Scorsese
for
THE AVIATOR
Do we really like Michael Mann this much (I once called him someone capable of being a great Auteur, if only he would get the hell out of Hollywood), but let's not forget about those statues of controversy, Michael Moore and/or Mel Gibson (both helmsmen on films inelgible for Best Picture) - other alts could include Hackford, Forster, Schumacher, Condon, Gondry, Salles, Marston or Brad Bird...

after the nominations were announced:
[4/5 prediction rate] Really surprised to see Marc Forster in here (Does anybody else see how pedestrian of a film FINDING NEVERLAND really is !?)...
BEST SCREENPLAY
THE AVIATOR CLOSER ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND KINSEY SIDEWAYS
alts might include: SPANGLISH, THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR, GARDEN STATE, HOTEL RWANDA, MILLION DOLLAR BABY, COLLATERAL, NEVERLAND, PHANTOM, THE INCREDIBLES, HUCKABEES OR KILL BILL...

after the nominations were announced:
[4/5 prediction rate] FINDING NEVERLAND ??????

THE AVIATOR FINDING NEVERLAND HARRY POTTER & THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN THE INCREDIBLES THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST
alts: BIRTH, ETERNAL SUNSHINE, SIDEWAYS, MILLION DOLLAR BABY, MOTORCYCLE DIARIES or A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT...

after the nominations were announced:
[2/5 prediction rate] Whoops... but am still glad SIDEWAYS garnered another nomination (SEVEN!!!) - not surprised with MILLION DOLLAR BABY making it, but SPANGLISH!!??
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
ALFIE HOTEL RWNDA HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS PHANTOM OF THE OPERA THE POLAR EXPRESS
alts: HUCKABEES, PRINCESS DIARIES 2, HARRY POTTER, SHREK 2 or just about anything...

alts: uh, anything...maybe LES CHORISTES, BAD EDUCATION, THE HOUSE KEYS, FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS, A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT...yada yada yada

after the nominations were announced:
[3/5 prediction rate] You never know with this category...
