The top ten - a magical thing indeed. Attempting, however so painstakingly, to name the top ten films of all time, is a daunting task at best - an impossible one at worst. Which films make the list, which films do not? I know, in order to whittle my own personal top ten list down to the bare boned skeleton of just ten films, I would have to leave off some of my favourite films, no matter how great they are, for they are still numbers eleven and down - and it just doesn't seem right dammit! But hey, no one said this would be easy.

We here at The Cinematheque are asking an ever-growing panel of Film Experts (Critics, Historians, Theoreticans, Filmmakers, Professors et cetera) to do just that - name The Top 10 Films of All-Time. And we want your opinion!

The idea is to create an ongoing - and updating - comprehensive list of the greatest films of all-time. When you send your lists, each film will be awarded points according to where they place on your list (10 for #1, 9 for #2, 8 for #3...well you get it - or, if you compile a list that is not in any specific order, we will award 5.5 points for each of those...trust me, the math is correct). With each successive list we recieve, the overall list will be updated accordingly.

The rules are simple (and brief). Your list can only have ten films on it (you may add as many additional films as you wish, so go ahead and create a Top 100 List if you want, but only the top ten will be counted toward the final point totals). You can also throw in any commentary you wish to add (either on the individual films or overall comments).

We are also gathering lists for The 10 Greatest Directors/Auteurs of All-Time, so please feel free to name your 10 favourite Directors as well (points will be tabulated the same way as for the best films).

There you have it, the rules are that simple. Oh yeah, by the way, since many lists will be changed upon seeing new films or changing ones mind, you may send an updated list after one year (and each subsequent year after that) and the overall list will be changed accordingly. The year wait is there in order to avoid constantly changing things at the drop of a hat (or when suddenly one day, someone decides Le Grand illusion is a greater film than La Regle du Jeu).

Anyway, send your lists to The Cinematheque (kevynknox@thecinematheque.com), along with a short bio and/or description of yourself for our contributors page, and we will post all individual lists, along with the overall "big" list. An everchanging, always evolving list of the greatest films of all-time!!
